Is music destructing (and other q's on music)?

J.K. Rowling claims that she avoids listening to music while working because it is destructing. I find it sometimes hard to concentrate on homework when the music is on, while I find doingother tasks more enjoyable while listening to music. Some top students rarely listen to music. In contrast, I find that many "average" students refuse to part with their iPods, and always have headphones on. Some people avoid listening to music because they believe that those who prefer listening to music during everyday tasks are afraid of thinking, and in effect are "escaping from thinking." What is your opinion on this? I understand music plays an important role in human development, but I haven't figured out what exactly is that role.

What effect does music have on concentration? Does music help you concentrate? What tasks do you find are best fitting to do while listening to music? Does the kind of music also matter (i.e., rock, classic, techno)?

I believe that music affects concentration.

It can be distracting if it grabs your attention away from your primary task. For example, you may be studying integral calculus and a good Beach Boys song comes on . You may tend to start dreaming about the beach and summer rather than the integral of e to the x.

However, music can provide a buffer by which we can filter out disconcerting background noise when we are trying to concentrate deeply. Sometimes, it is not possible to find a quiet place to concentrate. As a solution, you can choose to listen to some repetitive but soothing music that pushes out the other background sounds that are grabbing your attention.

Any sound that distracts you when you are trying to study will have an adverse effect on your ability to retain facts and to reason clearly. Music can be a major distraction in this scenario.

Music is a realm of Satan. He was known as the supreme maker of music and nothing has changed. Music can be soothing and calm but it can also be nothing more than distracting and evil.
