Music Requirements????

I am a 15 year old sophomore who wants to study music as a major in college. I know the guitar fairly well (I would say I'm proficient) and I know very little about the piano. I can read music while I play it on the piano at a very slow tempo, and do not have very many classical pieces to my reportoire. I would get music lessons in order to advance my knowledge for the piano, but the problem is I live in an extremely rural area, and there aren't any offered for miles and miles. (literally!) So, I'm thinking, if I want to study the piano and guitar in college, do I have to be really good? Or will the college (an average music major in a state university...not Julliard, Yale, or something fancy) provide me adequate lessons and then test my progress through the semesters?

I guess I could just say this: How good does one have to be at their instrument in order to gain admittance into a music major program at a standard college? Answers are appreciated!!!!!!!!!

Yes, offcourse their some qualification to enter university.

Some guidance:

1. First you need to know what you really want from studying in university...

What major do you want, guitar or piano, or maybee composition?

What genre of music do you want to be into?

Do you want to be a player/perforner or composer or conductor or historian or teacher or critic writer, or anything else...

well... take alot of time to think about this before deciding,

2. meanwhile... try to browse the net for Music University that support your condition and wants - costs, place/city, what kind of clasess do they have, what kind of major do they provide, facility, etc.

Don't forget to check their qualification for specifik major, they ussually put it on the net.

3. When you've choose wich univesity to take and know their qualification for your major, then you could adjust your skill to it...

--------------------------------------...

If you take guitar major, they will only test your guitar skill even thou you'll still need to take the basic piano class, because ussually it's a elementary class for all student - unless the piano major offcourse.

Some university uses classiccal repertoar in their qualification test - depend on the university you're heeding and the major you're taking.

Some university has a common course program and/or a special preparation class for candidate - depending on the university.

The qualification test at my university:

1. You play some part of their standard for the spesific instrument,

2. You play sight reading on a new part they gave in the middle of the test,

3. Solfege and music theory test: note identify (they gave the do and sounds some notes and You must identify those notes); singing a major scale (after they gave you the Do); Sing a note of their request (after they gave you the Do; Rythmic dictation (they sound a short rythme and you write it down).

These are all - as i could remember.

n.b. playing music while reading the part for the first time called "Sight Reading", if you've red it several times before and play it while reading it is a common things to do, you'll need to practice this alot.

You have to audition to get into any school of music, so yes you would need to show off proficiency. If you wanted to go into guitar, then piano skills aren't a must-have, you can take piano in college. Private lessons and study look good on a resume (and you'll probably have to tell how many years you've studied on your application) so I would try to find some way to get a teacher before college.

I don't know how many schools offer a music major in guitar performance, but that's also something to look into.

Good luck!
The best thing you could do is talk to the music department and/or admissions counselors at the college of your choice, and see what kinds of requirements are necessary in order to be accepted as a music major. You could also minor in music and major in a complimentary area. This way you could make progress at a slower pace, but it's really up to you. Talk to admissions and see what they advise you to do.

Good Luck!
My husband was a music major (vocal performance). He had to take secondary piano as a requirement. At his school, all music majors had to take piano. Like you, he had very little piano before entering university. That wasn't unusual. He got in based on his primary instrument. You'll do the same, and take secondary piano once you get there. I think he had to take it all four years.

You will have to be pretty good on guitar. But the requirements do vary by school. So, as others recommended, you can start now and contact the music department at a few of your state schools and ask them what they require for admissions, if they offer a guitar major, and etc. This will help you focus when it comes time to apply.

In addition, not all guitar programs focus on classical. Some have expertise in jazz, others in rock, etc. - so check into that, too.

Ask them about what sorts of pieces you'd need to prepare for your audition, what students typically study, if there are practice facilities available (because at some schools, unless you're in a music dorm, you aren't allowed to practice in your room). Ask if they offer BFA programs and BA programs (BFA tends to be more performance-intensive. BA tends to allow more time for study of other liberal arts coursework. It's more general than a BFA, although obviously you'd still be a music major.)

Lastly, if, in the end, you find that you aren't as proficient on guitar as schools demand for music performance majors, also consider other aspects of music in which you can major. Here are a few examples: music education, music business, music therapy.
